Monday News

Dear Families,

Our second cross-country ski time is scheduled for Tuesday. We will have to miss it again due to lack of snow. Let's hope we get some snow soon! Last week the students practiced putting on their ski equipment and taking it off. They are all ready to get out in the snow and ski.

Wednesday is family math night at Brewster-Pierce from 6:00-7:00. I'd love to see you there.

The students have been learning about heredity in science. We will start our unit on matter soon. This will be a great unit to investigate in the outdoor classroom.

Our read aloud book is Calico Captive by Elizabeth George Speare. This book will help students to understand the history of Vermont.

"Calico Captive is a historical fiction children's novel. It was inspired by the true story of Susanna Willard Johnson (1730–1810) who, along with her family and younger sister, were kidnapped in an Abenakis Indian raid on Charlestown, New Hampshire in August 1754.The main events in Calico Captive, which occurred on the brink of the French and Indian War, were taken from Johnson's narrative diary A Narrative of the Captivity of Mrs. Johnson, which was first published in 1796. Calico Captive is told through the eyes of Miriam, Johnson's younger sister, and her imagined adventures."
In reading and writing workshop, the students are in research clubs studying animals. Soon the students will apply what they have learned about nonfiction to do a report on a person, place or event that was significant to Vermont's history.
Enjoy your week,
Anna
