Monday News

Dear Families,

I hope you had a wonderful holiday! My family spent the weekend in Massachusetts visiting family.

The book project for December will be going home Monday. It will be to create a graffiti wall to display at school.

This month, the students will go on a field trip to the Sterling House in Richmond. The students will sing to the residents and on the way back will stop at Lavallee Drive in Huntington to see an example of erosion.

In Reading, we will continue to extract main ideas and supporting details from expository texts. In writing, the students will work to develop their thesis statement to write an opinion essay.

In Science, we are switching our Geology lense to focus on rocks and minerals instead of just erosion and weathering.

Exciting news!

3rd and 4th graders will have cross-country skiing during PE on six Fridays in January, February and March. This will take place at BPMS on five of those Fridays. The last Friday will be at Sleepy Hollow with a $5.00 trail fee. Look for forms going home this week.

Monday News

Dear Families,

Our schedule has many changes this week. On Monday we will take a trip to the book fair to browse the shelves. We will have Guidance on Monday, instead of Friday. On Wednesday, we will have prebuddies and go to the rec field to observe our fall micro-habitat.

We are finishing up our stream tables. The students noticed that the greater the flow of water, the more erosion impacts the land.

We finished our read aloud, Hoot. We are starting Poppy by Avi this week.

Mark your calendars - Tuesday, December 22nd at 1:30 pm, we will have the Winter Holiday Sing Along. We are going to try to have our publishing party for opinion writing at 1:00. More details to follow.

Monday News

Dear Families,

Two weeks until Thanksgiving vacation and we have a lot to pack in!

Science – Our geology unit has two parts.  We will finish up erosion, weathering, deposition and stream tables. We will learn about rocks and minerals after Thanksgiving break.

Word Study – Some of the spelling groups are learning the 1-1-1 doubling up rule in spelling. A word with 1 syllable, 1 vowel, and 1 final consonant gets a doubled ending consonant when adding a suffix.

Writing – We are working on opinion writing. We are using OREO to help us remember how to write a persuasive essay paragraph.

O-opinion, R-reason, E-evidence, O-restate opinion

Math – Third graders have started a data unit.

Reading – I will be progress monitoring students this week to get an accurate reading level and to make sure students are making progress.

Homework is sent home on Mondays and should be finished by Friday.

Don’t forget-Scholastic Book Fair is the week of November 16th!

Enjoy your week,

Mrs. Carter

Monday News

Dear Families,

A new book project will be sent home Monday and will be due at the end of the month. Students should bring their book to me by Friday to be approved.

Monday we will head to the Flynn Theater to see Andes Manta. SeƱora Harris will join us.

The fire fighters joined us Thursday. They reminded the students to change the batteries in their carbon monoxide and fire detectors during day light savings. They also handed out great goody bags!

Lyn Piper, a Huntingtonian, came to social studies on Thursday to educate the children about cochlear implants. Lyn is deaf and shared how she gets along in a hearing world. The children were excited to learn a little ASL (American sign language).

We are reading the book, Hoot, by Carl Hiassen during read aloud. We are almost finished and the students are beginning to see how all the characters are connected, but we still don't know how the burrowing owls are connected.

Monday, November 9th, will be a special lunch to celebrate the 50th day of
school during the 50th birthday year at BPMS.

The book fair will be November 16-20.
