Classroom News

Dear Families,

The students did a great job hosting all school morning meeting on Friday!

In science, we are finishing up our unit on organisms. We focused on animal survival and heredity. Organisms have variations in traits and the traits that help them survive, are passed to future generations. Humans can impact selection by selective breeding of animals, including dog breeds and selectively choosing variations in vegetables and fruits that we favor. By understanding selection, students can imagine how some animals of the past became domesticated, but allows students to also imagine how they might look in the future. Our next science unit will focus on energy.

In writing and reading workshop, we read non-fiction texts and wrote informational books. Now that we have completed a piece of writing in each unit (narrative, opinion and informational), we will go through the units again, but with a different lens (a new focus) for each piece of writing. In narrative writing, we focused on elaboration. In opinion writing, we focused on structure, and in informational writing, we focused on the text features.

Tuesday is the Holiday Sing-along at 1:30.

During our Outdoor Day on Thursday, we will be celebrating the Winter Solstice. We will make lanterns, food for the birds, have hot cocoa, and make bread on sticks by a fire!

On Friday, we will have a holiday craft day.

Boston chaperone forms are due by the 21st. Unfortunately, we will have to use the lottery system to choose chaperones, due to the high demand. I wish we could take everyone!

Book projects are due January 4th.

Please remind your young person to bring a glass jar by Thursday.

Thank you for all the supplies that have been donated this week for our celebrations! We couldn't do it without all your support!

Have a happy holiday!

Mrs. Carter
