Dear Families,
We will go to the Burnt Rock Farm and
the alpaca farm on Monday morning. Please have your child wear comfortable
shoes for walking and warm clothes. In social studies, we will be learning
about the economics of our region and the geography of the land. Burnt
Rock Farm grows many vegetables such as sweet potatoes, squash and onions that
they sell around our region. They are able to irrigate their crops with the Huntington
River next to their fields. BPMS often cooks their vegetables at lunchtime! The
alpaca farm is set in the Huntington River valley. It is a flat location for
large fields to graze the alpacas.
The
October book project directions will be going home on Monday. Each month there
is a different theme and it will always be due the last school day in the
month. Your child is expected to read a NEW book outside of school. Approval of
the book will be noted on the book project sheet. Please let me know if your
child needs help picking out a ‘just-right’ book.
If you have been reading the Backpack News from Ms. Hayes, you noticed that homework has been a big discussion in our school. In fact, it is a big discussion all over the United States. We will also be changing our homework policy in response to current research. One-size-fits-all math pages will no longer be sent home every Monday. However, this does not mean students should go home and spend the afternoon watching television or playing video games. Students should be reading, using their imaginations, exploring and being involved in family activities. We will be sending home a monthly optional homework sheet called the Calendar of Educational Adventures. Look for this sheet coming home this week.
I will be out on Wednesday for professional development around reading workshop. I do not have the name of the guest teacher. As soon as I find out I will let you know.
We will have prebuddies on Thursday afternoon. Prebuddies will be every month for 30 minutes on Thursday afternoons.

In
writing, the students are starting to create their realistic fiction story. The
unit will end around Thanksgiving and we will have a publishing party. The date
and time will be announced soon.
Enjoy
your week,
Anna
